Sculpture Fabrication and Installations
A Commitment to Craftsmanship across the team
Overview:
Hamilton Engineering collaborates closely with regional artists, local authorities, and public institutions to create durable, visually striking sculptures. These projects demand an understanding of artistic intent, structural practicality, and public safety. Hamilton’s role often ranges from early-stage prototyping support to fabrication, transportation, and crane-assisted installation.
Common Client Requests:
- Scaling up maquettes or sketches into full-sized public sculptures.
- Fabrication in mild steel, stainless steel, or Corten with specialist finishes
- Installation of artworks in prominent or weather-exposed locations
- Collaborating with artists to design feasible yet authentic concept structures.
- Integration of moving parts, reflective surfaces, or laser-cut components
Typical Challenges Faced by Clients:
- Transforming creative designs into technically sound and structurally safe objects
- Managing complex forms and scaling them from concept to realisation
- Ensuring the long-term durability of outdoor items exposed to the elements
- Balancing material choice with budget and visual expectations
- Managing installation in public areas, including traffic control and site safety

Hamilton’s work:
Hamilton supports public artists by transforming their designs into durable steel structures. In Bradford, they crafted the Cod Bottle Sculpture for artist Andy Small — a striking roundabout feature made of reflective metal, with a central rotating coal element. The design honours the area’s glass and coal heritage, while Hamilton managed the entire structural steel fabrication and crane-assisted installation.
Hamilton also created two Merseyrail sculptures in Bootle and Birkenhead Park. These featured laser-cut panels with local imagery, assembled into weather-resistant frames. In Bootle, the structure reached seven metres in height and was made entirely of stainless steel. The Birkenhead Park piece used mild steel with a deliberately rusted finish for texture.
Other notable commissions include a musical commemorative sculpture for Langollen Brass Band and a figurative piece in Birkenhead Park depicting a woman, child, and pram. Both were made from mild steel and fitted with protective coatings and mounting supports.
Project Types Included:
- Public roundabout and plaza sculptures with bespoke cladding
- Laser-cut sheet steel art for transport hubs
- Figurative sculptures for parks and memorial spaces
- Artist-designed scale-ups and structural interpretation
- Moving, rotating, or illuminated components incorporated into the sculpture
- Installations using crane or vehicle assistance with groundworks support.
